Kampen Machinefabriek can manufacture all types of downhole assembly items: Crossovers (Saver subs, bit subs, transition subs, extension subs etc)
A downhole drilling assembly is all the equipment from the end of the drill string to the face of the pilot hole. It includes the drill bit, steering tool (and other MWD / logging tools), a mud motor or RSS and drillbit. When drilling in softer formations on HDD projects sometimes a bent sub and tricone bit can be used instead of a mud motor. Other alternatives include trihawk drilling heads and jet plate adaptors.
A non-magnetic assembly is required when drilling with a magnetic steering tool. This will normally consist of an orienting sub (or a PWD/ Pressure While Drilling sub), a non-magnetic drill collar and a bent sub if necessary. There are many different types of non-magnetic alloys available for manufacture into a non-magnetic assembly, which cover a wide range of physical properties and prices.
We would strongly recommend customers against using softer “retail” alloys such as 316L stainless steel for downhole assembly items. These alloys are too soft and susceptible to wear resulting in frequent connection damage by overtorque. Using a softer stainless steel like 316L may save money in the short term but it will cost more in the long term thanks to more frequent repairs and potential assembly losses due to tool failure.
Kampen Machinefabriek Velsen has over 20 years experience in sourcing material and building non-magnetic assembly items, both for oil and gas customers and HDD customers.
We independently source the most suitable non-magnetic material for our customer’s application. We will only use oil field grade non-magnetic alloys (eg P530, P550, AG17, Datalloy etc) for downhole purposes and have material certificates available for everything we manufacture.
We can supply non-magnetic assemblies in all sizes, from 3” OD to 9 5/8” OD and our Drill collars are manufactured to the customers’ requirements in any length from 3m to 10m.
