Many downhole tools have some form of hardfacing on their body which occasionally requires repair or replacement. It is a metalworking process where a harder wearing material (often containing a form of carbide) is applied to a base metal which significantly increases its resistance to abrasion and general wear.
With our decades of experience fabricating and servicing downhole tooling, Kampen Machinefabriek is the perfect point of contact to discuss your hardfacing needs. We have certified welders in-house and Gas metal arc welding capabilities for a quality and hardwearing finish.
Kampen Machinefabriek is experienced with the heating and cooling procedures necessary for most of the common steel grades (including non-mag) used for downhole tool assembly. Care must be taken with the heating and cooling of steel tools, both with the maximum temperature and the rate of change of temperature to avoid changing the chemical properties of the material.
When done incorrectly, this can affect the hardness of the material, making it hard and brittle. This increases the risk of tool failure downhole and also makes subsequent thread repairs or recuts on the tool difficult or impossible to do.
